Our story
We are artist-owned, designed, built, and operated, nestled in the Michalopoulos artist studio complex which is located in a historic building dating back to the 1800’s. We hope that your residency here sparks a little artistic independence in your heart.
Our humble hotel is an adventure in wonder and we hope that it will remind you of the graciousness, love and care one experiences in a beloved friend’s home and that you will return to stay whenever life brings you back to the city of New Orleans.
Hotel Pompadour offers 12 outrageously playful, art-saturated suites, each carefully curated with original Michalopoulos artworks. The hotel is a love letter to the historic Faubourg Marigny, one of the last bastions of bohemian culture in America, home to Frenchman Street and stunning Victorian shotguns and Creole cottages.

Our Community
A Brief History of the Faubourg Marigny
The Faubourg Marigny neighborhood was established in the early 1800’s by prominent Creole Bernard de Marigny on his former plantation, located just down river from the French Quarter. De Marigny created a unique grid-patterned suburb that he sold to a diverse mix of residents, including free people of color and working-class Irish and German immigrants. Throughout the 19th century, the area grew and became home to Creole and Classic Revival cottages as well as ornamented shotgun houses. It developed a distinctive character and was known for its creative spirit.
By the mid-20th century, the Marigny had experienced significant urban decline, due to affluent owners moving to other neighborhoods with indoor plumbing. The neighborhood underwent a renaissance in the 1970s as artists, musicians, and preservationists were drawn to the neighborhood's historic architecture and rich cultural heritage, transforming it into a vibrant cultural hub. Today, the Marigny remains one of New Orleans'most eclectic neighborhoods, with Frenchmen Street continuing to be a world-renowned destination for live music. The area stands as a testament to New Orleans' multicultural spirit, embodying the city's unique blend of architectural innovation, musical tradition, and creative expression.

The Artist
Painter and sculptor James Michalopoulos was born in 1951 in Pennsylvania to a family of architects and painters. In 1981, he moved to New Orleans – drawn to the last bastion of hippie bohemian culture in America – and the city quickly became his muse. He developed a singular style, capturing the musicality and energy of its Creole cottages and shotgun houses in thick impasto paint. This body of work established him as the most influential artist living in the region today. Today, his painting practice explores a multitude of additional themes, including: the natural world, the human psyche, vehicles, animals, and New Orleans cemeteries.
His work has been exhibited all over the world, and he has received numerous accolades, including being named the official artist of the Jazz Fest eight times–more than any other artist. In 2026, a documentary about his life and work titled Michalopoulos: the Art of Celebration will be released.
In addition to his career as an artist, Michalopoulos founded local rum distillery Celebration Distillation – the first in the continental US since prohibition; established Orleania Artist Studios, which provides affordable work spaces for over 100 local artists; and was instrumental in the redevelopment of Covington’s historic downtown. In 2025, he opened the art-filled Hotel Pompadour on the grounds of his studio complex on Elysian Fields.
As steward of the Michalopoulos Foundation, he supports expressiveness in architecture and affordable housing for emerging artists. He remains a passionate preservationist and philanthropist. He still likes to costume for Mardi Gras.

Design Notes
Inspired by New Orleans' rich culture of hospitality, Hotel Pompadour celebrates craftsmanship, care, and artistic expression. Nestled in the historic core of the city, this hotel is a testament to slow, intentional design — where every object has been carefully curated by artists who chose to work mindfully, saving materials, and allowing time for discovery. The space honors the 180-year history of the building and the dedicated crafts people who have transformed it, creating an environment that feels deeply personal and alive with creative spirit.
More than just a place to stay, Hotel Pompadour is an invitation to experience art as a way of life. Created by the artist James Michalopoulos and Tatianna Macchione, the hotel offers a sustainable tourism solution that respects and is inspired by its community. It stands as a sanctuary of wonder, where guests are welcomed with graciousness and invited to feel treasured. This is not just a hotel, but an "art home" that celebrates the humanity of space—a place where care, love, and creativity intersect to create something extraordinary.
